I have been taking a trip down memory lane lately, and as a result, I have dug up quite a few gems from the blog archives! If you missed our 10 year blog retrospective, you can find that here. Here is a compilation shot of the original Winslow Culottes product photos:

Today I want to share a little refashioning project with you. I kept one of the original pairs of Winslow Culottes from the original pattern photoshoot back in 2016. I love the fabric I used and for a long time, these were beloved pants! They stopped fitting me a few years back but I still hung onto them thinking I could one day use the fabric for something else. That day has come! I am taking these classic full length Winslows and making our new wrap pant Winslows!

I love the pics of me wearing these back in the day. How cute is this!? I love my ‘big pants’ poses and I love that we took these pictures in an alleyway behind a restaurant in Vancouver. Sam and I used to wander the neighborhood looking for cool walls and interesting locations for shoots! These photos were the product pictures for the pattern for a time before we updated them later.

How to convert a classic Winslow to a wrap pants Winslow

Making this transition is pretty easy, it just involves a decent amount of unpicking. Here is what you do first.

  1. Unpick the waistband
  2. Unpick the back zipper
  3. Unpick the side seams and remove the pockets
  4. Unpick the pleats on the front and the back
  5. Sew the center back crotch seam closed (now that the zipper is gone)

Now you have a very deconstructed pair of Winslow Culottes. It is almost just flat fabric at this point, except for the crotch seam and inseams. Give everything a nice press. You need to decide if you want to use some of the fabric from the hem of the pants to make the new waist ties, or if you want to use a contrast fabric. The waist ties will shorten the hem of the pants about 8” (20.3 cm), so you may not want to do this if you are working with a shorter pair of Winslows. I had the longer view here, so I opted to cut my ties from the hem. I think a contrast fabric would look really great, too!

  1. Cut new waistband/tie pieces from the hem of the pants or from a different fabric.
  2. Press the sides of all four legs in ½” (1.3 cm) and another ½” (1.3 cm) and stitch in place.
  3. Re-hem the pants if necessary.
  4. Follow the new Winslow Culottes instructions to construct the waist ties and sew them onto the waist of the pants.

That is all there is to it! You may end up with shorter pants like I did here, but I am loving this new length! It was fun to take this garment and breathe new life into it. I adore this rayon print and I am so happy I get to wear it again!

You can wrap the Winslow wrap pants in the front or the back, so you can get different looks. Check out our blog post about this new view of Winslow to see examples. I wrapped mine towards the front here and I love how it looks and feels when I am walking. It is so flowy and fun!

I am SO happy I saved these pants all these years and that I can revisit them now during our 10 year anniversary celebration! The Winslow wrap pants are a fan favourite in the sewing community and I love them too. They are comfortable and cool and I always get loads of compliments on them!
